Walking the talk for this industry.
Labor availability is a big issue for most industries in most states. Unemployment is at near-record lows and when you need workers in technically-oriented, very specific jobs, such as the operation, management and maintenance of water and wastewater systems, the field of candidates gets slimmer yet. With more than 30 years in this industry, we’re not just going to stand by and see it shrink. Frankly, none of us can do that because clean, safe water is critical to the survival of our communities. So here’s what we’re doing about that: Many of you have known Dennis White for years. He tried to retire on us about a year ago, but I guess you could say we missed each other too much to let that go on for long. Dennis is back in a new role as Industry Ambassador. You may see him at conferences talking up the opportunities of working in this field. He’s tapping into audiences of people with the right skills, the right attitude and right desire to make a difference. This includes community college students. We’re even working with community colleges throughout the Midwest to engage this generation in our industry, and we’re offering generous scholarships for them when they do.
