Partner Spotlight: Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, Omaha
Background: Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, located in the heart of Omaha, Nebraska, was founded in 1872 and remains one of the most beautifully maintained and historically significant cemeteries in the state.
The Issue: Spanning 40 acres, the cemetery is home to more than 29,000 resting places. Until recently, most cemetery records were in paper format, including historical documents and contracts. There also was no digital map for visitors to easily locate their loved ones.
The PeopleService Solution: In January 2024, the cemetery’s board of directors agreed to hire PeopleService to digitize their records and use its GIS technology to map their entire property, including specific grave plots. The project was completed in nine months – more than a year under schedule, said cemetery General Manager Brad Cook. “They were very efficient.”
Cook said the project’s positive impact has been felt in multiple ways. “The ability for a family to go onto our webpage, click a button and search and find where their plot is – that’s huge. Also, on the internal side of things, instead of hunting through thousands of contracts, I can go online and find one in two minutes.”
Cook also was able to preserve several priceless historical documents that were only in paper form, including the cemetery’s original land grant from 1872 and its original bylaws, which were handwritten in cursive.
“It’s been a great project and PeopleService has been wonderful to work with through the whole process,” Cook said.
