What is a water/wastewater operator?
Treatment plant and system (collection and distribution) operators manage a system of machines, often through the use of control boards to transfer or treat water or wastewater by adding chemicals to disinfect water. It takes knowledge and skills to get water from natural resources such as reservoirs, streams and groundwater into people’s homes. Similarly, to convert the wastewater from drains and sewers into clean water that is safe to release into the environment requires knowledge and skills. This job includes these responsibilities:
- Inspect equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Monitor meters and gauges and accurately report readings.
- Collect and test water and sewage samples.
- Clean and maintain equipment, tanks, filter beds and other work areas.
- Work indoors and outdoors.
- Typically work during the day, in addition to being on-call for a one-week period and perform weekend rounds usually based on a rotating schedule.
- Occasionally must respond to after-hour emergencies, such as sewer backups or water main breaks.
Operators need a high school diploma or equivalent to become operators. Operators must be licensed by the state in which they work. Maintenance Technicians are operators-in-training and provided with home study coursework and on-the-job training before they can successfully test to become a certified operator. Operators and Maintenance Techs need to have a strong mechanical background in order to diagnose and repair related equipment, such as pumps and blowers. Many community colleges and technical schools offer water environment technology degree programs. PeopleService supports these learning institutions and those who want to go into these programs and this career. We offer scholarships to college students and we support the industry by offering career growth opportunities to those with the knowledge and skills to keep water safe and clean in the communities we support.
